Kenechukwu Umelo
Technical Gameplay Designer
ABOUT ME

I am a Game Designer with three years of professional experience in VR engineering-focused roles for tech start-ups such as King Crow Studios and Lucid Dream.
I am actively seeking an entry-level position in the games industry.
I specialize in technical design, AI behaviors, and game systems. I am keen on designing dynamic, engaging experiences and player engagement choices.
I'm passionate about implementing game AI - from AI crowd and faction systems to behavior trees, state machines, pathfinding, navigation, and animations. I also love crafting systemic systems to create organic encounters for players or NPCs. Otherwise, I enjoy scripting gameplay mechanics, innovative content, and side activities that encourage players to engage with game worlds beyond just the narrative.
With strong technical documentation, problem-solving, tools engineering, and rapid prototyping skills, I can bring ideas to life using minimal assets—whether it’s geometric placeholders or quick test maps—to iterate, test, and refine gameplay efficiently.
Throughout my journey, I’ve continuously honed my adaptability, communication, and teamwork soft skills, ensuring my voice is heard in collaborations while continually pushing myself to grow as a designer and programmer.

When I was 8 years old, my father brought home a copy of Jak 2 for PlayStation 2. The game's narrative, open world, characters, and combat immediately brought me into the realm of game design. I spent hours playing to the point where I replayed the story over 30+ times due to missing collectibles in locked story areas. One day I accidentally opened the hidden debug mode in the game for the first time, and messing with it lit that spark in my curiosity for game development. Through experimentation with Jak 2's debug mode, I determined my career field right there at an early age and never looked back since then. I vowed to deliver the same experience I gained from Jak 2 to any project I worked on.
So if I am ever asked what my ALL-TIME favorite game is?
Jak 2 will always be the answer!
